VO: Omaha Chapter Gathering
November: We will be assisting Dr. Shannon Bartelt-Hunt by acting as a pilot group evaluating new Citizen Science protocols being developed to identify micro plastics in the environment. She and her student will provide samples, testing materials, protocols, and evaluation sheets. This will be in a lab at UNO or PKI in Omaha. We will require RSVPs for this event so they can set up for enough people. If our attendance exceeds UNO's Covid capacity at the time, we will run a second set (probably immediately before or after the initially planned time).
Date: Sunday, November 14, 2021
When: 2-4 PM (may be adjusted depending on number of attendees and Covid room capacity adjustments)
Where: UNO/PKI (TBD)
Details: This is an opportunity to be cutting edge with Citizen Science. Microplastics are known to be an environmental issue, but monitoring types and levels is in its infancy. They need to know if lay people can do their protocols and produce usable results. They'll want feedback about how easy or difficult the instructions were, how easy or hard it was to do the tests themselves, etc. We get to do genuine science by being ourselves while playing with their toys and telling them how much fun it was, or wasn't. The chemistry lab they plan to use has a standard capacity of 24 bench spaces. Covid precautions may cut that in half. This is why we will require RSVPs in November for an accurate count for preparing the lab. Masks will be required. They will provide any other needed safety equipment (goggles, gloves, etc). Details will be updated closer to the event.
